Best Spots for Live Music in San Marcos

While visitors flock to Austin to take in shows from the best bands, area locals know that San Marcos is a hidden hotspot for live music of all types. Here are four of the top live music hangouts in San Marcos.

Cheatham Street Warehouse

Beer isn’t the only thing that draws people from across the region to Cheatham Street Warehouse. Started in 1974, this hotspot has become the venue of choice for both local and national honky tonk, country, and western music bands. You can get tickets for upcoming shows with acts such as Kody West, Grant Gilbert, and Shotgun Rider for around $10 per person. Cheatham Street also offers Songwriter’s Circle nights where songwriters perform new material to live audiences for free. Although the Warehouse has gone through many changes of ownership throughout its 40-plus year tenure in San Marcos, the Songwriter’s Circle remains an element of the original owners’ vision for the place.

The Patti Strickel Harrison Theater

Even Texans need a break from the traditional country music scene periodically, and the Patti Strickel Harrison Theater at Texas State University (TSU) doesn’t disappoint. This fine arts venue features opera, classical, and jazz music that is performed by TSU students and faculty as well as select guest artists. Upcoming performances include the TSU choir’s rendition of Brahm’s German Requiem, Noche de Mariachi courtesy of the Latin Music Studies department, and The Nutcracker by the school’s jazz ensemble.

Valentinos San Marcos

Great Italian food just got even better when it’s coupled with live music night at Valentino’s Pizza. Valentino’s is located near downtown San Marcos and is a casual dining option that’s popular with the college crowd. The diner’s pizzas are reasonably priced, and its management continues to attract patrons of all ages with a diverse lineup of local and national musicians. At Valentino’s live music nights, you’ll likely hear indie, pop, and punk performances. Recent acts included up and coming indie/folk singer Juliet McConkey.
