“Feels Like Old Austin” Travel magazine raves about Kissing Tree’s hometown

“San Marcos feels how Austin once did before it became a tech metropolis—effortlessly cool, laidback, and distinctly Central Texan,” raves Travel + Leisure magazine

Remember Old Austin, with its “live music, laid-back charm, and stunningly clear river waters?”

You can’t turn back time, but you can find a new version of Old Austin in Kissing Tree’s hometown of San Marcos, according to Travel + Leisure, which recently posted a glowing tribute to Kissing Tree’s hometown.

“This small city balances its old roots with fresh, vibrant energy. It’s part river town, part music town, part quirky college town with mermaid statues scattered across downtown,” writes Jill Robbins, who says she grew up visiting San Marcos.

“Ask any person of an older generation, and they’ll often tell you that San Marcos feels how Austin once did before it became a tech metropolis—effortlessly cool, laidback, and distinctly Central Texan,” she writes.

Here are some key San Marcos features called out in the T + L article.

  1. With crystal-clear water, the San Marcos River is the town’s heart and soul. A constant 72 degrees, it draws tubers and paddleboarders of all ages, including Kissing Tree residents on regular field trips.
  2. The once-glitzy Aquarena Springs theme park has been transformed into The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, part of Texas State University.
  3. But – the quirky culture of Aquarena Springs lives on! You can still take a glass-bottom boat tour, and the fabled mermaids are still a big part of San Marcos culture. Kissing Tree residents love to dress up and join the parade at the annual Mermaid Capital of Texas Festival!
  4. While Austin’s live music scene is being slowly edged out by “progress,” San Marcos has an authentic, laid-back scene rooted in Texas Country, American and indie rock. Legendary venues like Cheatham Street Warehouse, The Marc and Ragnar’s are jumping every night of the week.
  5. The restaurant scene is “unfussy and eclectic,” Robbins writes, with plenty of classic Texas comfort food.
  6. San Marcos is perhaps best-known as a college town. We’re proud to say many TXST alums & profs live at Kissing Tree, and we regularly host lectures and other events with their faculty. We’re proud to maintain a scholarship fund for TXST students, and residents ages 65 and older are eligible for six credit hours of free tuition per semester.
