Top Tips for Aging Gracefully

Have you ever noticed those ladies and gentlemen who just seem to emit style and elegance regardless of their ages? You might think that they have a personal shopper who makes sure that their clothes look just right or that they’re simply blessed with good genes. While quality clothing and genetics help, they’re probably not the only things that are making your friend stand out. Here are some tips for aging gracefully.

Remove Stress

Stress is one of the main culprits for premature aging. While the body is designed to handle moderate amounts of stress, too much stress that occurs over long periods of time will take a toll on your mind and body. When you’re chronically stressed, your body produces high amounts of the stress hormone cortisol, which impacts brain function. You can literally lose the ability to recall certain memories due to long-term, severe stress. An imbalance of stress hormones that is caused by prolonged stress also leads to blood vessel and heart problems.

Improve Diet

As you’ve gotten older, you may have let your diet slip up a bit. You indulge in a McDonald’s meal here and a donut there. While these snacks won’t kill you right away, they don’t contribute to timeless good looks or a fun-to-be-around personality. Junk foods and beverages fill your body with empty calories that support weight gain. Rather than eating these foods that are filled with saturated fat, cholesterol, and refined sugars, choose plant-based meals and snacks that flood your body with nutrients. Foods that are rich in Vitamin C, K, and E such as kale, avocados, and walnuts help your skin to look good. When your skin looks good, you feel better about yourself.

Maintaining Physical Fitness

Good nutrition is also needed to fuel the body for everyday activities and for regular fitness routines. Maintaining a fitness schedule is another way that you can age gracefully. When you’re overweight, you aren’t likely living your best life. Proper nutrition that is coupled with vigorous exercise will help you to keep your weight within a normal range for your frame.

Weight training is particularly important for those who want to get the best out of life at any age. This exercise helps to strengthen your bones as well as your muscles. You’ll not only have an extra spring in your step after regularly performing weight-bearing exercises, but your bones are also more likely to recover well from accidental slips and falls.

If you have chronic health issues such as Type 2 diabetes or heart disease, strength training can be your ticket to better health. Adding weights to your fitness routine, allows the muscles to use sugars in the body more effectively, which improves the plight of Type 2 diabetes sufferers. Weight training improves heart function and bone density according to a National Institute of Health publication. The study also found that strength training reduces depression and insomnia in many cases. A healthier body is a happier body.

Nurturing Positive Relationships

Relationships are the spices of life. They make your existence richer and more colorful. When they’re of the healthy, positive variety, they add significantly to your well-being. To develop and maintain classic good looks, consider becoming a social bug. You can use traditional and modern techniques to connect with old friends or find new ones. Social media channels such as Facebook and LinkedIn make it easy for you to reach out to former classmates.
