Fall into Fun in San Marcos,Texas
Contrary to popular belief, we do actually have a fall season in Texas. The days of cool breezes, golden sunlight and clear blue skies make me want to get out as much as possible so that I can enjoy them! We here at Kiss & Tell know that our residents feel the same, so we have put together a list of the top things to do in SMTX during Fall. If it isn’t already your favorite season, it surely is about to be.
Sacred Springs Pow Wow – October 14th-15th
Organized by the Indigenous Cultures Institute, the Sacred Springs Pow Wow is an annual festival held at Spring Lake in San Marcos. An important geographical location, local historical stories tell of Spring Lake being the site of a sacred meeting place where no violence could take place. This festival, celebrating its seventh year, will feature over 100 Native dancers, an outdoor market, musical groups, and other historical demonstrations. Visit their website, Sacred Springs Pow Wow, for the schedule of events and other important information.
First Saturday Birding Hikes – San Marcos
Interested in hiking? How experiencing the beautiful natural world of the San Marcos area? Held once a month at various locations, local photographer Stephen Ramirez guides birding enthusiasts to the best viewing spots. Fair warning, the hikes begin at sunrise so be sure to get some rest the night before! To reserve a spot and receive location notifications contact Stephen at Stephen@birdsiview.org
Dam Chili Cook Off – October 21
This is one of the funkiest, most vibrant, and, if you will excuse the pun, spiciest events in the Hill Country. Started in 2005 as a benefit for the San Marcos Youth Services Bureau, the cook off has grown to include a local artisan market and a silent auction. Except for a few years, this event has been old at the old cotton gin/damn in Martindale. If making chili isn’t your style, then simply spend the day sampling all the other chef’s hard work! Visit Dam Chili Cook Off for event information.
Lost River Film Festival – November 2-5
The inaugural Lost River Film Festival will consist of four days of independent cinema held at venues all around San Marcos. Presented by the San Marcos Cinema club, the roster will feature a variety of short films, web content, and features in addition to workshops, interactive events, concerts and more. This is a great way to experience all parts of the city as the films will be presented at various venues including downtown, Texas State University campus, and the San Marcos River. Trust me, this is one event you do not want to miss. Visit Lost River Film Festival for more info.
