Best Places to Meet People When Retired

Retirement is an exciting milestone that affords you the freedom to pursue your passions and hobbies. Once you retire, maintaining an active adult lifestyle is easier than ever before. The downside to retirement, however, is the potential for isolation and loneliness – even those of us who were social butterflies in the workplace may have a difficult time making friends once we retire.

By simply pursuing your interests, you’ll find yourself in an ideal position to make new friends. The best places to meet people when you’re retired include the following – most of which are right in your backyard.

In the Great Outdoors

It’s no secret that Texas Hill Country is beautiful. But did you know that spending time in the great outdoors may help improve your mood, lower your blood pressure, and keep you fit? With all the perks that come from an active lifestyle and fresh air, is there a better place to meet others who are committed to active adult living?

You can get started on your own by taking walks in your neighborhood or hiking in one of the many recreational areas in the vicinity. Local hiking hotspots include the expansive, 570-acre Purgatory Creek Natural Area, Spring Lake, and Schulle Canyon.

While Giving Back

With all the free time that comes with retirement, there’s plenty of opportunity to give back. Volunteering can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment, but it also provides you with a prime opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who share your philanthropic spirit.

Maybe you’re passionate about a particular cause, such as recycling or animal welfare. There’s likely an organization or club you can join that’s dedicated to your favorite cause. You can also consider volunteering at a local museum, hospital, or youth home. Volunteering your time is a multi-faceted activity that will enrich your life, positively impact the lives of others and give you the chance to make lifelong friends.

At Community Events

No matter the size of your hometown, you can take part in a number of community events throughout the year. These special events are the perfect place to meet people of a similar age and who have interests that align with yours. In addition to neighborhood events led by Kissing Tree’s Lifestyle Director, check your local library calendar for a list of activities and lectures, many of which are free to the public. Or you can take part in seasonal celebrations, such as the public lighting of a holiday tree or a festival that honors a local tradition.

Socializing is a huge part of any community event whether it’s a weekly farmers’ market, concert in the park, food festival or art walk. So get out there, meet new people, and help your community thrive.
