San Marcos is in the heart of Central Texas. The town, which is also known as San Marvelous, was founded in 1851 with its spring-fed river being the main reason for its establishment. In addition to wining and dining, there are tons of things to do in San Marcos for the holiday season.

Visit the San Marcos River

Head to the San Marcos River, a spring fed river that stays between 68 and 72 degrees all year. Along the river, there is always something to do like tubing or kayaking. There are also yoga lessons along the river and a number of parks where you can host a family BBQ. Rio Vista Park is along the river and offers great amenities to visitors.

Attend Sights and Sounds Festival

There is nothing more festive than the Sights and Sounds Festival in San Marcos. There is a lot to see when you attend the festival – especially during Christmas. You can enjoy Christmas lights, school choirs, local vendors and more. This festival is a San Marcos staple and a great holiday tradition.

Meadows Center/Aquarena Springs Center

Meadows Center for Water and Environment, or what has always been called Aquarena Springs Center, houses the glass bottom boat tours and Spring Lake Park. Here, you can enjoy glass bottom boat tours, see Spring Lake Natural area, take a paddling tour and much more.

Purgatory Creek Natural Area

This natural area sits over Edwards Aquifer recharge area. Here you can enjoy meadows, juniper bushes and canyon lands among others. This nine-mile trail is divided into three areas including Lower Purgatory, Upper Purgatory and Prospect Park. Each of the areas has a natural area for those who love hiking.
