Volunteering in San Marcos

One great advantage of living in a retirement community is your flexible schedule. If you have extra time on your hands, you have more availability for volunteer options. San Marcos, Texas, is overflowing with volunteer opportunities. Many organizations have formed volunteer communities to team up and serve the city and surrounding areas. This list provides some of the opportunities available for volunteering in San Marcos.

A.W.A.R.E. – Always Wanted a Riding Experience, or A.W.A.R.E., provides therapeutic horseback riding experiences to individuals with physical, mental and emotional disabilities in an effort to improve strength, coordination, self-confidence and other important qualities. You don’t need to have any experience with horses to volunteer. If you love horses and have a heart for disabilities, this should be an exceptionally fulfilling way to spend your time volunteering.

Central Texas Medical Center – If you enjoy working in a medical setting, the Central Texas Medical Center is seeking your help. You would likely work directly with patients and their families, doctors, staff members and other volunteers. Positions are available in a variety of departments, such as hospice, the gift shop, or the information desk.

CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, relies on volunteers to advocate for foster children and help them quickly find safe, permanent homes. As a CASA volunteer, you would research case records and interview people involved in a child’s life. You would monitor the progress of the child and their family situation and be an advocate for the child’s needs. Each volunteer assists one child at a time, ensuring the child receives all the attention their case needs. The evaluations done by the volunteers help the court system make more informed decisions.

Hays County Food Bank – The Hays County Food Bank has several locations, including San Marcos. Volunteers can sign up to be a driver, a warehouse associate, a distribution assistant, a front office or client services clerk, a farmer’s helper, a community speaker and educator, a social media ambassador, and a special projects and events assistant.

Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center – If you would like to help victims of abuse, the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center would like you to join them in the fight against domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and child abuse. To help out, you can apply for a regular volunteer opportunity, which includes office help, working on special events, preparing meals, working on the landscape, and serving on the board of directors. Or you could choose more involved volunteer work by helping with childcare, working the hotline, and providing crisis intervention and patient advocacy for sexual assault victims and their families at local hospitals. You can also volunteer your professional skills.

San Marcos River Foundation – Volunteers are needed year-round for conservation projects that include habitat restoration, river clean-ups, water quality testing, removal of invasive species and replanting of native plants, educational events, and more.

Southside Community Center – Southside Community Center’s homeless shelter is always looking for volunteers to help cook, serve, and socialize at the shelter. If you wish to prepare food at home and bring it to the shelter, be ready to cook for 50 to 75 people.

Government services often have volunteer opportunities as well, such as the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, San Marcos Public Library, San Marcos Parks and Recreation, and the San Marcos Police Department. There are many more volunteer opportunities available in San Marcos, as well as other parts of Hays County, Caldwell County, and surrounding counties. If you’re looking for a rewarding way to spend time and help others, make volunteer work a regular part of your schedule.
