Activities for Seniors

Retirement life doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, retirement offers many fantastic opportunities to get out there and have some fun. Plus, the right activities and excursions can help keep your body in shape and your mind sharp.

Are you ready to make the most of your golden years? To help you discover some of the myriad things to do in retirement, we’ve compiled a list of several of the top activities for seniors.

Stay Physically Active

Staying physically active is important at every age for your weight and your overall health, but it’s especially important as you get older. You can get your exercise by joining a gym, walking or jogging, or taking yoga and Tai Chi classes, as a few examples. Kissing Tree has fitness classes weekly and a two-story fitness center opening in 2020.

Beyond all of that, though, there are plenty of other fun things that you can do to keep your body limber, mobile, and strong that may not feel like traditional exercise. Golf, tennis, dancing, swimming, and bowling are just a few examples. You can even try hiking, biking, and gardening, which are all wonderful ways to spend time in the great outdoors, connecting with Mother Nature. Even owning a pet, such as a dog that requires walks, can help you stay active, while also giving you companionship and purpose.

Play for Your Mind

The right hobbies, such as reading and writing, can help you train your brain so that you can remain focused and clear-headed, and so you can keep your memory sharp. You can play puzzle games and trivia games that challenge your mind, or you could even play board games or card games with friends to make it even more of a good time. Kissing Tree offers a variety of games groups like Texas Hold ‘em Poker, Mahjongg, and Dominoes that are perfect for keeping your mind strong.

Beyond playing games, also consider taking some classes to learn how to do something totally new, or enhance your skills in an area that you’re already familiar with. Whether it’s learning how to cook, play a musical instrument, write poetry, or anything in between, just because you’re retired doesn’t mean that you can’t approach life with a sense of curiosity and willingness to continually expand your mind.

Get Creative

Creative hobbies are yet another way to keep yourself busy while stimulating your mind. Use your imagination for anything from knitting and crocheting, to drawing, coloring, and painting. You can even try making jewelry, or crafting with clay and wood. Ultimately, you might be surprised by what you can make with your hands!

“Arts and crafts” doesn’t have to be a solitary activity either. Get some friends together, or join classes, so that you can let your creativity soar while socializing with others at the same time. Check out our activities calendar for a variety of creative groups and classes that Kissing Tree offers. You might even consider heading out to a local park or nature preserve with your camera and some friends so you can all take photos and compare the beautiful images that you’ve captured. The possibilities really are endless.

Take Trips

Travel is an incredible way to stay active, expand your mind, and experience brand new things. And now that you’re retired, you’re no longer restricted by your work schedule, which means you get to choose where to go and when to go there.

Whether you take extended trips abroad, go on a cruise or bus tour, or head out on day trips to visit unique spots that are closer to home is entirely up to you. Switch things up and take it all in. Indulge in new foods, expose yourself to different cultures, visit museums and historical sites, and explore natural landscapes. At Kissing Tree, one of our tribe communities is the Voyagers, where like-minded travelers and adventurers can connect with each other. You’ll undoubtedly make memories that you’ll cherish.

Connect with Community

Feeling like you are a part of a social group is really important as you get older. Sure, you can spend time with your family and friends, but making fresh connections can help boost your happiness and give you additional ideas for staying active. Thankfully, there are various ways to connect with people in your community, such as through local events in town, parties, and holiday gatherings.

Check our community events calendar for exciting things to do throughout the year, such as concerts, sporting events, carnivals and fairs, art shows, and more. You might even consider volunteering to help others, or you might choose to become active in local politics so that you can contribute to making your community better.
