Top 5 Places for Good Food & Drink in the Hill Country

Living in one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, the San Marcos and the surrounding Hill Country area is almost limitless with unique and interesting places to enjoy good food and cocktails. We here at Kiss and Tell were challenged with creating a list of the top five places to eat and drink locally and we think that we knocked it out of the park! It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Kate’s Place – 600 FM 2325, Wimberley

Tucked away in a cozy little house with a lovely garden patio, Kate’s Place is one of Wimberley’s best hidden gems. Kate’s is owned by Kate Tilton, a Wimberley resident who emphasizes fresh, locally grown food for her menu. This spot is beer and wine only but the options are varied and interesting. Kate’s Place is a great spot for a casual, light dinner, especially if you are sitting in their outdoor space!

Cody’s Bistro & Lounge – 690 Centerpoint Rd #209

San Marcos Not only does Cody’s offer flavorful food with unique craft cocktails, it is located right up the road from Kissing Tree! With low lighting, candles, and jazz music the ambience is perfect for a romantic date night. The jazz theme is prevalent throughout the restaurant from the mural of B.B. King to the interesting cocktail names. (Be sure to try the Eagle Flys on Friday!) If low lighting isn’t your style, check out the open-air seating in the back of the restaurant for a more casual vibe.

The Gristmill – 1287 Gruene, Rd, Gruene

The Gristmill is arguably one of the most famous restaurants in the entire state of Texas. Built on the site of a cotton gin built in 1878, it’s views of the Guadalupe River award it the restaurant with the best view on the list. The Gristmill serves traditional Texas fare such as chicken fried steak, fried catfish and pecan pie. With an extensive beer, wine, and liquor menu, the Gristmill can make for the perfect spot to relax after a day shopping in Gruene. Grab one of their fresh lime margaritas, and a chicken fried steak for some serious Texas points.

Pie Society-700 N Lbj Dr Ste 107, San Marcos

Sometimes when people think of a pizza restaurants, they conjure up images of a dive-y spot with mugs of beer. While Pie Society certainly offers mugs of beer, they like to mix things up with margaritas on draft and rotating wine options. Their pizzas, much like the name suggests, are unique and use only the freshest ingredients. Combine the great food with the funky layout and colorful walls, you’ll find this ain’t your average pizza joint Tip: one of our favorite combinations is the Balance of Power with the draft margaritas. Trust me, it works.

Myron’s Steakhouse-136 N Castell, New Braunfels

Located in the heart of downtown New Braunfels, Myron’s is the perfect example of a classic upscale steakhouse. They serve only the choicest cuts of meat which they cook, along with the rest of their fare, to perfection. With white tablecloths and low candle light, Myron’s is a perfect spot for any occasion. In addition to the fine food, their liquor menu, especially their whisky offerings, is extensive.
